Prevent Commingling

You’re a budding solopreneur or mompreneur and you think you should probably set your numbers up from the start, but bookkeeping is the most boring and tedious thing on the planet and you just can’t get yourself to get started. Plus even if you could, there’s a million other things you need to do instead!

If you do nothing else, separate your personal and business transactions. Maybe you have a credit card or bank account that you don’t really use anymore… designate it for business spending only! Maybe you will need to open a new account… it doesn’t have to be a real “business” account with fees and minimum balance requirements, it just has to be separate from the account you use to buy groceries, Netflix, and Amazon purchases, etc.

If you can avoid commingling your personal and business spending (and biz income should go to this separate checking account, too) then you can avoid hiring a bookkeeper for a lot longer… And when you do finally bring on that special bookkeeping professional, she will have a much easier time setting everything up for you!
